The Batch Jobs project provides a replacement for the batch facility in Drupal core. It provides a way to find out the status of tasks, when tasks started and ended and to run tasks individually.
This project was written by Gaia Environmental Sciences personnel in November, 2013 and has been ported to Drupal 8.
